Question: 1

There are two numbers such that the sum of twice the first and thrice the second is 39, while the sum of thrice the first and twice the second is 36. The larger of the two is

(A) 3

(B) 5

(C) 6

(D) 9

Ans: D

Let the number be x and y.

Then, 2x + 3y = 39 -----------(i)

And 3x + 2y = 36 -------(ii)

On solving (i) and (ii), we get : x = 6 and y = 9.

∴ Larger number = 9.

Question: 2

A certain number of two digits is three times the sum of its digits and if 45 be added to it, the digits are reversed. The number is

(A) 23

(B) 25

(C) 27

(D) 29

Ans: C

Let the ten’ digit be x and unit’ digit be y.

Then, 10x + y = 3(x + y) ⇒ 7x - 2y = 0

10x + y + 45 = 10y + x ⇒ y - x = 5

Solving (i) and (ii) we get x = 2 an y = 7.

∴ Required number = 27.

Question: 3

The sum of three numbers is 136. If the ratio between first and second be 2 : 3 and that between second and third is 5 : 3, then the second number is

(A) 40

(B) 48

(C) 60

(D) 72

Ans: C

A : B = 2 : 3 and B : C = 5 : 3 = $${3}/{5} × 5$$ : $${3}/{5} × 3$$ = $$3 : {9}/{5}$$

So, A : B : C = 2 : 3 : $${9}/{5}$$ = 10 : 15 : 9.

∴ Second number = $$(136 × {15}/{34})$$ = 60.

Question: 4

In a Mathematics examination the number scored by 5 candidates are 5 successive odd integers, if their total marks are 185, the highest score is

(A) 39

(B) 41

(C) 43

(D) 47

Ans: b

Let the five successive odd number be x, x + 2, x + 4, x + 6, x + 8

Then, according to given information

185 = x + x + 2 + x + 4 + x + 6 + x + 8

⇒ 185 = 5x + 20

⇒ 5x = 185 - 20 = 165

⇒ x = 33.

Highest number = 33 + 8 = 41.

Question: 5

If a number is multiplied by two thirds of itself the value so obtained is 864. What is the number?

(A) 32

(B) 34

(C) 36

(D) 38

Ans: C

Let the number be x.

Then, $$x × {2}/{3} x$$ = 864

⇔ $${2}/{3}$$x2 = 864

⇔ x2 = $$(864 × 3 / 2)$$ = 1296 ⇔ x = $$√1296$$ = 36.
