Question: 1

A man and a boy received Rs. 800 as wages for 5 days for the work they did together. The man’s efficiency in the work was three times that of the boy. What are the daily wages of the boy?

(A) Rs. 40

(B) Rs. 46

(C) Rs. 56

(D) Rs. 76

Ans: A

1 man = 3 boys

[Given]: Wages for five days = Rs. 800

∴ Wages for one day = $${800} / {5}$$ = Rs. 160.

The wages of Rs. 160 are to be divided among the man and boy in the ratio 1 : 3.

∴ Wages of the boy per day = $${1}/{4} × 160$$ = Rs. 40.

Question: 2

8 men can do a work in 12 days. After 6 days of work, 4 more men engaged to finish the work. In how many days would the remaining work be completed?

(A) 1

(B) 2

(C) 3

(D) 4

Ans: D

Part of the work done by 8 men in 6 days = $${6}/{12}$$ = $${1}/{2}$$

Remaining work = $$1 - {1}/{2}$$ = $${1}/{2}$$

Required number of days = $${1}/{2} × 8$$ = 4 days.

Question: 3

A can finish a work in 24 days, B in 9 days and C in 12 days. B and C start the work but are forced to leave after 3 days. The remaining work is done by A in

(A) 2 days

(B) 5 days

(C) 7 days

(D) 10 days

Ans: D

Part of work done by B and C in 3 days = 3$$({1/9} + {1/12)$$ = $${7}/{12}$$

Remaining work = $$1 - {7}/{12}$$ = $${5}/{12}$$

Remaining work is done by A in $${5}/{12} × 24$$ = 10 days.

Question: 4

6 men can complete a piece of work in 12 days, 8 women can complete the same piece of work in 18 days, whereas 15 children can complete the piece of work in 10 days. 4 men, 12 women and 20 children work together for 2 days. If only men were to complete the remaining work in 1 day how many men would be required?

(A) 12

(B) 24

(C) 36

(D) 48

Ans: C

Males : Females : Children

6 × 12:8 × 18:18 × 10

72 : 144 : 180

2 : 4 : 5

So, 2 males = 4 females = 5 children

4 males + 12 females + 20 children

= 4 + 6 + 8 = 18 males.

∴ 6 males finished a piece of work in 12 days.

∴ 18 males finished the work = $${12 × 6} / {18}$$ = 4 days.

Work in 2 days = $${2}/ {4}$$ = $${1}/{2}$$

Rest of the work will be finished in a day by = 18 × 2 = 36 males.

Question: 5

Sunil completes a work in 4 days, whereas Dinesh completes the work in 6 days. Ramesh works 1{1}/{2} times as fast as Sunil. The three together can complete the work in

(A) $$1{3}/{8}$$ days

(B) $$1{5}/{7}$$ days

(C) $$1{5}/{12}$$ days

(D) $$1{5}/{19}$$ days

Ans: D

Time taken by Ramesh = $$4 × {2}/{3}$$ = $${8}/{3}$$ days

Work done by all the three in 1 day

= $${1}/{4} + {1}/{6} + {3}/{8}$$

= $${6 + 4 + 9} / {24}$$ = $${19}/{24}$$

∴ Required time = $${24}/{19}$$ = $$1{5}/{19}$$ days.
