Question: 1
A family consists of grandparents, parents and three grand children. The average age of the grandparents is 67 years, that of the parents is 35 years and that of the grand children is 6 years. What is the average age of the family?
(A) $$31{5}/{7}$$
(B) $$32{1}/{7}$$
(C) $$33{1}/{5}$$
(D) $$34{2}/{3}$$
Ans: A
Total family age = 2 × 67 + 2 × 35 + 3 × 6 = 134 + 70 + 18 = 222 years.
∴ Average age of family = $${222}/{7}$$ = $$31{5}/{7}$$.
Question: 2
The average age of husband, wife and their child 3 years ago was 27 years and that of wife and the child 5 years ago was 20 years. The present age of the husband is
(A) 30 years
(B) 35 years
(C) 40 years
(D) 50 years
Ans: C
Sum of the present ages of husband, wife and child
= (27 × 3 + 3 × 3) years = 90 years.
Sum of the present ages of wife and child
= (20 × 2 + 5 × 2) years = 50 years.
∴ Husband’s present age = (90 - 50) years = 40 years.
Question: 3
The average of the two digit numbers, which remain the same when the digits interchange their positions, is
(A) 22
(B) 33
(C) 44
(D) 55
Ans: D
Average = $$({11 + 22 + 33 + 44 + 55 + 66 + 77 + 88 + 99}/{9})$$
= $$[{(11 + 99) + (22 + 88) + (33 + 77) + (44 + 66) + 55}/{9}]$$
= $${4 × 110 + 55}/{9}$$ = $${495}/{9}$$ = 55.
Question: 4
A shop of electronic goods is closed on Monday. The average daily sales for remaining six days of a week is Rs.15,640 and the average sale on Tuesday to Saturday is Rs.14,124. The sales on Sunday is
(A) Rs. 20,188
(B) Rs. 21,704
(C) Rs. 22,204
(D) Rs. 23,220
Ans: D
Average sales per day for six days of the week = Rs. 15,640
Total sales of six days of the week = 15640 × 6 = Rs. 93,840
Average sales of Tuesday to Saturday = Rs. 14,124
Total sales from Tuesday to Saturday = 14,124 × 5 = Rs. 70,620
∴ Sales on Sunday = Rs. (93,840 – 70,620) = Rs. 23,220.
Question: 5
The average monthly expenditure of a family was Rs. 2200 during the first 3 months, Rs. 2250 during the next 4 months and Rs. 3120 during the last 5 months of a year. If the total savings during the year were Rs. 1260, find the average monthly income of the family.
(A) Rs. 2205
(B) Rs. 2405
(C) Rs. 2705
(D) Rs. 2905
Ans: C
Total yearly expenditure = Rs. (2200 × 3 + 2250 × 4 + 3120 × 5)
= Rs. (6600 + 9000 + 15600) = Rs. 31200.
Total yearly savings = Rs. 1260
Total yearly income = Rs. (31200 + 1260) = Rs. 32460.
∴ Average monthly income = Rs. $${32460}/{12}$$ = Rs. 2705.
