Question: 1

A person divided Rs.10800 among his three sons in the ratio 3 : 4 : 5. Second son kept Rs.1000 for himself, gave Rs.600 to his wife and divided the remaining money among his two daughters in the ratio 11 : 9. Then one of his daughters received

(A) Rs.1000

(B) Rs.1050

(C) Rs.1100

(D) Rs.1150

Ans: C

Second son’s share = Rs.$$(10800 × {4}/{12})$$ = Rs.3600.

Money distributed between the two daughters

= Rs.[3600 – (1000 + 600)] = Rs.2000.

First daughter’s share = Rs.$$(2000 × {11}/{20})$$ = Rs.1100.

Second daughter’s share = Rs.$$(2000 × {9}/{20})$$ = Rs. 900.

Question: 2

The sum of three numbers is 116. The second number and the third number are in the ratio of 9 : 16 while the first number and the third number are in the ratio of 1 : 4. Find the second number.

(A) 8

(B) 16

(C) 36

(D) 64

Ans: C

Second : Third = 9 : 16,

Third : First = 4 : 1 = 16 : 4.

∴ Second : Third : First = 9 : 16 : 4.

Second number = $$(116 × {9}/{29})$$ = 36.

Question: 3

Two numbers are in the ratio 4 : 5 and their L.C.M. is 180. The smaller number is

(A) 15

(B) 36

(C) 45

(D) 54

Ans: B

Let the numbers be 4x and 5x.

Then, their L.C.M. = 20x.

20x = 180 or x = 9.

∴ Smaller number = 4x = 4 × 9 = 36.

Question: 4

Three numbers A, B and C are in the ratio 1 : 2 : 3. Their average is 600. If A is increased by 10% and B is decreased by 20%, then to get the average increased by 5%, C will be increased by

(A) 100

(B) 180

(C) 240

(D) 360

Ans: B

Let A = x, B = 2x, C = 3x. Then, $${x + 2x + 3x} / {3}$$ = 600

⇒ 2x = 600 ⇒ x = 300.

So, A = 300, B = 600, C = 900.

New value of A = 110% of 300 = 330.

New value of B = 80% of 600 = 480

New average = 105% of 600 = 630.

New value of C = (630 × 3) - (330 + 480) = 1080.

∴ Increase in value of C = (1080 - 900) = 180.

Question: 5

Mr. Sharma’s expenditure and savings are in the ratio of 3 : 2. His income increases by 10%. How expenditure also increases by 12%. How much percent does his savings increase?

(A) 6%

(B) 7%

(C) 11%

(D) 13%

Ans: B

Let Mr. Sharma’s expenditure be Rs.3x and his savings be Rs.2x.

Income = Rs.(3x + 2x) = Rs.5x.

Increased income = 110% of Rs.5x = Rs.5.5x.

Increased expenditure = 112% of Rs.3x = Rs.3.36x.

Increased savings = Rs.(5.5x - 3.36x) = Rs.2.14x.

Increase in savings = Rs.(2.14 - 2) x = Rs.0.14x.

∴ Increase % = $$({0.14}/{2x} × 100)$$% = 7%.
