Question: 1

A can finish a work in 18 days and B can do the same work in 15 days. B worked for 10 days and left the job. In how many days, A alone can finish the remaining work?

(A) 4

(B) 5

(C) 6

(D) 7

Ans: C

B’s 10 day’s work = $$({1}/{15} × 10)$$ = $${2}/{3}$$.

Remaining work $$(1 - {2}/{3})$$ = $${1}/{3}$$

Now, $${1}/{18}$$ work is done by A in 1 day.

∴ $${1}/{3}$$ work is done by A in $$(18 × {1}/{3})$$ = 6 days.

Question: 2

8 men can complete a piece of work in 20 days. 8 women can complete the same work in 32 days. In how many days will 5 men and 8 women together complete the same work?

(A) 12 days

(B) 14 days

(C) 16 days

(D) 18 days

Ans: C

8 × 20 men = 8 × 32 women

5 men = 8 women

Now, 5 men + 8 women = 8 + 8 = 16 women

D1 × M1 = M2 × D2

8 × 32 women = 16 × D2

D2 = $${32 × 8} / {16}$$ = 16 days.

Question: 3

B and C together can complete a work in 8 days. A and B together can complete the same work in 12 days, and A and C together can complete the same work in 16 days. In how many days can A, B and C together complete the same work?

(A) $$3{9}/{13}$$

(B) $$3{5}/{12}$$

(C) $$7{5}/{13}$$

(D) $$7{5}/{12}$$

Ans: C

B and C together can complete a work in = $${1}/{8}$$

A and B together can complete a work in = $${1}/{12}$$

A and C together can complete a work in = $${1}/{16}$$

Work completed by 2(A + B + C) in a day

= $${1/8} + {1/12} + {1/16}$$

= $${6 + 4 + 3} / {48 }$$= $${13}/{48}$$

Work completed by (A + B + C) in day = $${13} / {48 × 2}$$ = $${13}/{96}$$

So, A, B and C together can complete the work in $${96}/{13}$$ days = $$7{5}/{13}$$ days.

Question: 4

A can finish a work in 18 days and B can do the same work in half the time taken by A. Then, working together what part of the same work can they finish in a day?

(A) $${1}/{2}$$

(B) $${1}/{6}$$

(C) $${1}/{9}$$

(D) $${2}/{7}$$

Ans: B

$${18 + 9} / {18 × 9}$$ = $${1}/{6}$$.

Question: 5

A man, a woman and a boy can together complete a piece of work in 3 days. If a man alone can do it in 6 days and a boy alone can do it in 18 days, how long will a woman alone take to complete the work?

(A) 7 days

(B) 9 days

(C) 18 days

(D) 27 days

Ans: B

Woman’s one day’s work = $${1/3} – {1/6} – {1/18}$$ = $${6 - 3 - 1} / {18}$$ = $${1}/{9}$$.
