Question: 1

Two numbers are such that all the square of one is 224 less than 8 times the square of the other. If the numbers be in the ratio of 3 : 4, the numbers are

(A) 6, 8

(B) 9, 12

(C) 12, 16

(D) None of these

Ans: A

Let the numbers be 3x and 4x.

Then, (4x)2 = 8 × (3x)2 - 224

⇔ 16x2 = 72x2 - 224

⇔ 56x2 = 224 ⇔ x2 = 4.

⇔ x = 2.

So, the numbers are 6 and 8.

Question: 2

The sum of two numbers is 25 and their difference is 13. Find their product.

(A) 104

(B) 114

(C) 315

(D) 325

Ans: B

Let the numbers be x and y.

Then, x + y = 25 and x - y = 13.

4xy = (x + y)2 - (x - y)2

= (25)2 - (13)2

= 625 - 169

= 456

⇒ xy = 114.

Question: 3

Out of six consecutive natural numbers if the sum of first three is 27, what is the sum of the other three?

(A) 24

(B) 25

(C) 35

(D) 36

Ans: D

Let the six number be x, x + 1, x + 2, x + 3, x + 4 and x + 5.

Then, x + (x + 1) + (x + 2) = 27 ⇒ 3x + 3 = 27.

Required sum = (x + 3) + (x + 4) + (x + 5)

= 3x + 12 = (3x + 3) + 9 = 27 + 9 = 36.

Question: 4

The sum of three consecutive odd numbers is 20 more than the first of these numbers. What is the middle number?

(A) 7

(B) 9

(C) 10

(D) 11

Ans: B

Let the number be x, x + 2 and x + 4.

Then, x + (x + 2) + (x + 4) = x + 20

⇔ 2x = 4 ⇔ x = 7.

∴ Middle number = x + 2 = 9.

Question: 5

The sum of the squares of three consecutive natural numbers is 2030. What is the middle number?

(A) 24

(B) 25

(C) 26

(D) 27

Ans: C

Let the numbers be x, x + 1 and x + 2.

Then, x2 + (x + 1)2 + (x + 2)2 = 2030

⇔ 3x2 + 6x – 2025 = 0

⇔ x2 + 2x – 675 = 0

⇔ (x + 27) (x – 25) = 0

⇔ x = 25.

∴ Middle number = (x + 1) = 26.
