Time, Speed and Distance Questions for Placement - 1

Question: 1

A person travels from P to Q at a speed of 40 kmph and returns by increasing his sped by 50%. What is his average speed for both the trips?

(A) 42 kmph

(B) 45 kmph

(C) 46 kmph

(D) 48 kmph

Ans: D

Speed on return trip = 150% of 40 = 60 kmph.

∴ Average speed = $$({2 × 40 × 60} / {40 + 60})$$km/hr = $$({4800} / {100})$$km/hr = 48 km/hr.

Question: 2

Excluding stoppages, the speed of a bus is 54 kmph and including stoppages, it is 45 kmph. For how many minutes does the bus to stop per hour?

(A) 7

(B) 8

(C) 10

(D) 12

Ans: C

Due to stoppage, it covers 9 km less.

Time taken to cover 9 km = $$({9} /{54} × 60)$$min = 10 min.

Question: 3

A thief running at 8 km/hr is chased by a policeman whose speed is 10 km/hr. If the thief is 100 metres ahead of the policeman, then the time required for the policeman to catch the thief will be

(A) 1 minutes

(B) 2 minutes

(C) 3 minutes

(D) 4 minutes

Ans: C

Relative speed = (10 - 8)km/hr = 2 km/hr.

Required time = Time taken to cover 100 m at
relative speed = $$({100} / {2000})$$hr =$${1} / {20}$$ hr = $$({1}/{20} × 60)$$ min = 3 min.

Question: 4

If Karnan travels at a speed of 60 kmph and covers a distance in 9 hrs, then how much time will he take to travel the same distance at a speed of 90 kmph?

(A) 6 hrs

(B) 8 hrs

(C) 9 hrs

(D) 12 hrs

Ans: A

Speed of Karnan = 60 kmph

Time = 9 hrs

Distance = Speed x Time = 60 x 9 = 540 km.

∴ Time taken to cover 540 km at 90 km/hr = $${540} / {90}$$ = 6 hours.

Question: 5

The average speed of a bus is one third of the speed of a train. The train covers 1125 km in 15 hours. How much distance will the bus cover in 36 minutes?

(A) 12 km

(B) 15 km

(C) 18 km

(D) 20 km

Ans: B

Speed of the train = $$({1125} / {15})$$km/hr = 75 km/hr.

Speed of the bus = $$({1} / {3} × 75)$$km/hr = 25 km/hr.

Distance covered by the bus in 60 min = 25 km.

Distance covered by the bus in 36 min = $$({25} / {60} × 36)$$km = 15 km.
