Question: 1
A, B and C together earn Rs. 300 per day, while A and C together earn Rs. 188 and B and C together earn Rs. 152. The daily earning of C is
(A) Rs. 20
(B) Rs. 40
(C) Rs. 68
(D) Rs. 112
Ans: B
B’s daily earning = Rs. (300 - 188) = Rs. 112.
A’s daily earning = Rs. (300 - 152) = Rs. 148.
C’s daily earning = Rs. [(300 – (112 + 148)] = Rs. 40.
Question: 2
Ronald and Elan are working on an assignment. Ronald takes 6 hours to type 32 pages on a computer, while Elan takes 5 hours to type 40 pages. How much time will they take, working together on two different computers to type an assignment of 110 pages?
(A) 7 hours
(B) 7 hours 30 minutes
(C) 8 hours
(D) 8 hours 15 minutes
Ans: D
Number of pages typed by Ronald in 1 hour = $${32} / {6}$$ = $${16} /{3}$$.
Number of pages typed by Elan in 1 hour = $${40} / {5}$$ = 8.
Number of pages typed by both in 1 hour = $$({16} / {3} + 8)$$ = $${40} / {3}$$.
∴ Time taken by both to type 110 pages
= $$(110 × {3} / {40})$$hrs = $$8{1}/{4}$$hrs = 8 hrs 15 min.
Question: 3
A job can be done by 3 skilled worksmen in 20 days or by 5 boys in 30 days. How many will they take if they work together?
(A) 8 days
(B) 10 days
(C) 12 days
(D) 14 days
Ans: C
3 men’s 1 day’s work = $${1} / {20}$$
5 boys 1 day’s work = $${1} / {30}$$
(3 men + 5 boys) 1 day’s work = $$({1} / {20} + {1} / {30})$$ = $${5} / {60}$$ = $${1} / {12}$$.
∴ 3 men and 5 boys will complete the work in 12 days.
Question: 4
Reena, Aastha and Shloka can independently complete a piece of work in 6 hours, 4 hours and 12 hours respectively. If they work together, how much time will they take to complete that piece of work?
(A) 2 hours
(B) 4 hours
(C) 6 hours
(D) 8 hours
Ans: A
Reena’s 1 hour’s work = $${1} /{6}$$
Aastha’s 1 hour’s work = $${1} /{4}$$
Shloka’s 1 hour’s work = $${1} /{12}$$
(Reena + Aastha + Shloka)’s 1 hour’s work
= $${1} /{4}$$ + $${1} /{6}$$ + $${1} /{12}$$ = $${6} / {12}$$ = $${1} / {2}$$.
Hence Reena, Aastha and Shloka together take 2 hours to complete the work.
Question: 5
A man, a woman and a boy can do a piece of work in 6, 9 and 18 days respectively. How many boys must assist one man and one woman to do the work in 1 day?
(A) 6
(B) 9
(C) 13
(D) 17
Ans: C
(1 man + 1 woman)’s 1 day’s work = $${1}/{6}$$ + $${1} /{9}$$ = $${5}/{18}$$.
Remaining work = $$(1 – {5} / {18})$$ = $${13} / {18}$$
Work done by 1 boy in day = $${1} /{18}$$.
∴ Number of boys required = $$({13} / {18} × 18)$$ = 13.
