Question: 6

Two trains of equal lengths take 10 seconds and 15 seconds respectively to cross a telegraph post. If the length of each train be 120 metres, in what time(in seconds) will they cross each other travelling in opposite direction?

(A) 8

(B) 10

(C) 12

(D) 16

Ans: C

Speed of the first train = $$({120} / {10})$$m/sec = 12 m/sec.

Speed of the first train = $$({120} / {15})$$m/sec = 8 m/sec.

Relative speed = (12 + 8)m/sec = 20 m/sec.

∴ Required time = $${(120 + 120)} / {20}$$ sec = 12 sec.

Question: 7

A train is moving at a speed of 132 km/hr. If the length of the train is 110 meters, how long will it take to cross a railway platform 165 m long?

(A) 5 sec

(B) 6 sec

(C) 7.5 sec

(D) 10 sec

Ans: C

Speed of the train = $$(132 × {5} / {18})$$ m/sec = $$({110} / {3})$$ m/sec

Total distance covered = (110 + 165) m = 275 m/sec

∴ Required time = $$(275 × {3} / {110})$$ sec = 7.5 sec.

Question: 8

A 160 meter long train takes 30 seconds to cross a platform. What is the speed of the train?

(A) 80 km/hr

(B) 90 km/hr

(C) 100 km/hr

(D) Data inadequate

Ans: D

To find the speed of the train, length of the platform must be known. But it is not given. Hence data are inadequate.

Question: 9

A train of length 150 meters takes 10 seconds to pass over another train 100 meters long coming from the opposite direction. If the speed of the first train be 30 km/hr, the speed of the second train is

(A) 54 km/hr

(B) 58 km/hr

(C) 60 km/hr

(D) 72 km/hr

Ans: C

Relative speed = $$({150 + 100} / {10})$$ m/sec

                    = 25 m/sec = $$(25 × {18} / {5})$$ km/hr = 90 km/hr

∴ Speed of second train = (90 – 30) km/hr = 60 km/hr.

Question: 10

A train moves with a speed of 108 kmph. Its speed in metres per second is

(A) 10.8 m/sec.

(B) 18 m/sec.

(C) 28 m/sec.

(D) 30 m/sec.

Ans: D

108 kmph = $$(108 × {5} / {18})$$m/sec = 30 m/sec.
