Question: 1

A sum of Rs.731 is divided among A, B and C such that A receives 25% more than B and B receives 25% less than C. What is C’s share in the amount?

(A) Rs.172

(B) Rs.262

(C) Rs.272

(D) Rs.372

Ans: C

B = 75% of C = $${3}/{4}$$C;

A = 125% of B = 125% of $${3}/{4}$$C = $$({5}/{4} × {3}/{4}C)$$ = $${15}/{16}$$C.

∴ A : B : C = $${15/16}C : {3/4}$$C : C = 15 : 12 : 16.

Sum of ratio terms = (15 + 12 + 16) = 43.

C’s share = Rs.$$(731 × {16}/{43})$$ = Rs. 272.

Question: 2

Rs.33630 are divided among A, B and C in such a manner that the ratio of the amount of A to that of B is 3 : 7 and the ratio of the amount of B to that of C is 6 : 5. The amount of money received by B is

(A) Rs.12390

(B) Rs.13290

(C) Rs.13590

(D) Rs.14868

Ans: D

A : B = 3 : 7, B : C = 6 : 5 = $$(6 × {7}/{6})$$ : $$(5 × {7}/{6})$$ = $$7 : {35}/{6}$$.

A : B : C = 3 : 7 : $${35}/{6}$$ = 18 : 42 : 35.

Sum of ratio terms = (18 + 42 + 35) = 95.

∴ B’s share = Rs.$$(33630 × {42}/{95})$$ = Rs.14868.

Question: 3

One year ago the ratio of the ages of Sarika and Gouri was 3 : 4 respectively. One year hence the ratio of their ages will be 10 : 13 respectively. What is Sarika’s present age?

(A) 18 years

(B) 19 years

(C) 20 years

(D) 22 years

Ans: B

Let Sarika’s and Gauri’s age one year ago be 3x and 4x years respectively.

Sarika’ age 1 year hence = (3x + 2) years.

Gauri’s age 1 year hence = (4x + 2) years.

∴ $${3x + 2}/ {4x + 2}$$ = $${10}/{13}$$

⇒ 13(3x + 2)= 10(4x + 2)

⇒ 39x + 26 = 40x + 20

⇒ x = 6.

Hence, Sarika’s present age = 3x + 1

= (3 × 6 + 1) years = 19 years.

Question: 4

Six coins of gold and silver of equal weights are melted and new coins are cast. The ratio of gold and silver in one of the coins is 2 : 1, in another two coins 3 : 5 and 7 : 5 in the remaining coins. What will be the ratio between gold and silver respectively in the new coins?

(A) 1 : 1

(B) 12 : 11

(C) 19 : 17

(D) 42 : 25

Ans: C

Gold in new coins = $$({2}/{3} + 2 × {3}/{8} + 3 × {7}/{12})$$ units

= $$({2/3} + {3/4} + {7/4})$$ units = $${19}/{6}$$ units.

Silver in new coins = $$({1/3} + 2× {5/8} + 3 × {5/12})$$ units

= $$({1/3} + {5/4} + {5/4})$$ units = $${17/6}$$ units.

∴ Required ratio = $${19/6} : {17/6}$$ = 19 : 17.

Question: 5

Rs.16000 are to be distributed between B and A such that B gets Rs.4000 less than A. The ratio of the amount received by A to that received by B is

(A) 1 : 3

(B) 2 : 5

(C) 3 : 5

(D) 5 : 3

Ans: D

A + B = 16000, B = A – 4000

⇒ A + (A - 4000) = 16000

So, A = 10000, B = 6000.

∴ A : B = 10000 : 6000 = 5 : 3.
