Question: 1

Company C sells a line of 25 products with an average retail price of Rs.1200. If none of these products sells for less than Rs.420 and exactly 10 of the products sells for less than Rs.1000, then what is the greatest possible selling price of the most expensive product?

(A) Rs.2600

(B) Rs.7800

(C) Rs.11800

(D) Rs.17800

Ans: C

To find the greatest possible S.P. of the most expensive product, we need to consider the minimum S.P. of the remaining 24 products which is Rs.420 each for 10 products and Rs.1000 each for other 14 products.

Minimum S.P. of 24 products = Rs.(420 × 10 + 1000 × 14)

= Rs. (4200 + 14000) = Rs.18200.

Total S.P. of 25 products = Rs.(1200 × 25) = Rs.30000.

∴ Greatest possible S.P. of the most expensive product

= Rs. (30000 - 18200) = Rs. 11800.

Question: 2

The average of two numbers is XY. If one number is X, the other is

(A) Y

(B) $${Y}/{2}$$

(C) 2XY - X

(D) x(x - 1)

Ans: C

Sum of numbers = 2xy.

∴ Other number = 2XY - X.

Question: 3

The mean of 12, 22, 32, 42, 52, 62, 72 is

(A) 10

(B) 20

(C) 30

(D) 40

Ans: B

12 + 22 + 32 + ….. + n2 = $${n(n + 1) (2n + 1)}/{6}$$

∴ 12 + 22 + 32 + ….. + 72 = $$({7 × 8 × 15}/{6})$$ = 140.

So, required average = $${140}/{7}$$ = 20.

Question: 4

The average of marks of 13 papers is 40. The average of marks of the first 7 papers is 42 and that of the last 7 papers is 35. What are the marks of the seventh papers?

(A) 16

(B) 19

(C) 22

(D) 24

Ans: B

Marks in the seventh paper = (42 × 7 + 35 × 7 - 40 × 13)

= (294 + 245 - 520) = 539 – 520 = 19.

Question: 5

The average monthly expenditure of a family was Rs.2200 during the first 3 months; Rs.2250 during the next 4 months and Rs.3120 during the last 5 months of a year. If the total savings during the year were Rs.1260, find the average monthly income of the family.

(A) Rs.1705

(B) Rs.2705

(C) Rs.3705

(D) Rs.4705

Ans: B

Total yearly expenditure = Rs.(2200 × 3 + 2250 × 4 + 3120 × 5)

= Rs.(6600 + 9000 + 15600) = Rs.31200.

Total yearly savings = Rs.1260.

Total yearly income = Rs.(31200 + 1260) = Rs.32460.

∴ Average monthly income = Rs.$$({32460} / {12})$$ = Rs.2705.
