Question: 1

Two glasses of equal volume respectively are half and three fourths filled with milk. They are then filled to brim by adding water. Their contents are then poured into another vessel. What will be the ratio of milk in this vessel?

(A) 1 : 3

(B) 2 : 3

(C) 5 : 3

(D) 6 : 2

Ans: C

Milk in 1st glass = $${1}/{2}$$ unit;

Milk in 2nd glass = $${3}/{4}$$ unit.

Water in 1st glass = $${1}/{2}$$ unit.

Water in 2nd glass = $${1}/{4}$$ unit.

∴ Required ratio = $${½ + ¾} / {½ + ¼}$$ = $${5/4} ×{4/3}$$ = 5 : 3.

Question: 2

The sides of a triangle are in the ratio 1/2 : 1/3 : 1/4 and its perimeter is 104 cm. the length of the longest side (in cm) is

(A) 32

(B) 48

(C) 52

(D) 62

Ans: B

Ratio of sides = $${1}/{2} : {1}/{3} : {1}/{4}$$ = 6 : 4 : 3.

Let the sides be 6x, 4x and 3x.

Then, 6x + 4x + 3x = 104 or 13x = 104 or x = 8.

∴ Longest side = 6x = (6 × 8) m = 48 m.

Question: 3

The bus fare and train of a place from Kolkata were Rs.20 and Rs.30 respectively. Train fare has been increased by 20% and the bus fare has been increased by 10%. The ratio of new train fare to new bus fare is

(A) 3 : 5

(B) 5 : 3

(C) 18 : 11

(D) 19 : 11

Ans: C

Required ratio = 120% of Rs. 30 : 110% of Rs.20

= 36 : 22 = 18 : 11.

Question: 4

Express 50 paise: Rs.4 in its simplest form.

(A) 1 : 2

(B) 1 : 4

(C) 1 : 8

(D) 1 : 10

Ans: C

Rs.1 = 100 paisa

Rs.4 = 400 paisa

Required ratio = 50 paisa : 400 paisa = 1 : 8.

Question: 5

A, B and C are boxes containing marbles in the ratio 1 : 2 : 3. Total number of marbles is 60. The above ratio can be changed to 3 : 4 : 5 by transferring

(A) 2 marbles from A to B and 1 from C to B

(B) 3 marbles from B to C

(C) 4 marbles from C to B

(D) 5 marbles from C to A

Ans: D

When marble are shared in the ratio 1 : 2 : 3.

A’s share = $$(60 × {1}/{6})$$ = 10

B’s share = $$(60 × {2}/{6})$$ = 20

C’s share = $$(60 × {3}/{6})$$ = 30

When marbles are shared in the ratio 3 : 4 : 5

A’s share = $$(60 × {3}/{12})$$ = 15

B’s share = $$(60 × {4}/{12})$$ = 20

C’s share = $$(60 × {5}/{12})$$ = 25

Clearly, 5 marbles have been transferred from C to A.
