Then \$\${x}/{3} + {x}/{2}\$\$ = 5

A man walked at a speed of 4 km/hr from point A to B and came back from point B to A at the speed of 6 km/hr. What would be the ratio of the time taken by the man in walking from point A to B to that from point B to A?

Ratio of speeds = 4 : 6 = 2 : 3.

Bombay Express left Delhi for Bombay at 14.30 hours, travelling at a speed of 60 km/hr and Rajdhani Express left Delhi for Bomaby on the same day at 16.30 hours travelling at a speed of 80 km/hr. How far away from Delhi will the two trains meet?

Let they meet x hours after 14.30 hours.

Then, 60x = 80(x - 2) ⇒ x = 8

∴ Required distance = (60 × 8) km = 480 km.

Akash leaves home for school which is 12 km from his house. After, the school, he goes to his club which is 7 km from his school. If his house, school and club all fall in a line, then what is the minimum distance he has to travel to get back home?

For the distance to be minimum, the club must lie between Akash’s home and school.

Hence, required distance = (12 – 7) km = 5 km.

A man travelled from the village to the post office at the rate of 25 kmph and walked back at the rate of 4 kmph. If the whole journey took 5 hours 48 minutes, find the distance of the post office from the village.

Average speed = \$\$({2xy}/ {x + y})\$\$ km/hr = \$\$({2 × 25 × 4} / {25 + 4})\$\$ km/hr = \$\${200}/{29}\$\$ km/hr.

Distance travelled in 5 hours 48 minutes,

i.e. \$\$5{4}/{5}\$\$ hrs = \$\$({200/29} ×{ 29/5})\$\$ km = 40 km.

∴ Distance of the post office from the village = \$\$({40}/{2})\$\$ = 20 km.
