Ratio and Proportion Questions for IBPS PO, SO, Clerk Pdf - 1
Question: 1
A jar contains black and white marbles. If there are ten marbles in the jar, then which of the following could not be the ratio of black to white marbles?
(A) 1 : 4
(B) 7 : 3
(C) 9 : 1
(D) 1 : 10
Ans: D
Since the number of black and white marbles are whole numbers, so the sum of the terms of the ratio must be a factor of 10.
1 + 4 = 5, 7 + 3 = 10 and 9 + 1 = 10, but 1 + 10 = 11, which is not a factor of 10.
Question: 2
A person divided Rs. 10800 among his three sons in the ratio 3 : 4 : 5. Second son kept Rs. 1000 for himself, gave Rs. 600 to his wife and divided the remaining money among his two daughters in the ratio 11 : 9. Then one of his daughters received
(A) Rs. 1000
(B) Rs. 1050
(C) Rs. 1100
(D) Rs. 1150
Ans: C
Second son’s share = Rs. $$(10800 × {4}/{12})$$ = Rs. 3600.
Money distributed between the two daughters
= Rs. [3600 – (1000 + 600)] = Rs. 2000.
First daughter’s share = Rs. $$(2000 × {11}/{20})$$ = Rs. 1100.
Second daughter’s share = Rs. $$(2000 × {9}/{20})$$ = Rs. 900.
Question: 3
In an alloy, the ratio of copper and zinc is 5 : 2. If 1.250 kg of zinc is mixed in 17 kg 500 g of alloy, then the ratio of copper and zinc in the alloy will be
(A) 1 : 2
(B) 2 : 1
(C) 2 : 3
(D) 3 : 2
Ans: B
Quantity of copper in 17.5 kg of alloy = $$(17.5 × {5}/{7})$$ kg = 12. 5 kg.
Quantity of zinc in 17.5 kg of alloy = $$(17.5 × {2}/{7})$$ kg = 5 kg.
∴ Required ratio = 12.5 : (5 + 1.25) = 12.5 : 6.25 = 2 : 1.
Question: 4
Rs. 2010 are to be divided among A, B, C in such a way that if A gets Rs. 5, then B must get Rs. 12 and if B gets Rs. 4, then C must get Rs. 5.50. The share of C will exceed that of B by
(A) Rs. 270
(B) Rs. 360
(C) Rs. 430
(D) Rs. 620
Ans: A
A : B = 5 : 12,
B : C = 4 : 5.50 = 12 : 16.5 = 12 : $${33}/{2}$$
A : B : C = 5 : 12 : $${33}/{2}$$ = 10 : 24 : 33.
Sum of ratio terms = 10 + 24 + 33 = 67.
C’s share = Rs. $$(2010 × {33}/{67})$$ = Rs. 990.
B’s share = Rs. $$(2010 × {24}/{67})$$ = Rs. 720.
Required difference = Rs. (990 – 720) = Rs. 270.
Question: 5
A company blends two varieties of tea from two different tea gardens, one variety costing Rs. 20 per kg and the other Rs. 25 per kg in the ratio 5 : 4. He sells the blended tea at Rs. 23 per kg. Find his profit or loss percent.
(A) Profit of 3.5%
(B) No profit, no loss
(C) Profit of 5%
(D) Loss of 5%
Ans: A
Let 5kg of the first variety be mixed with 4 kg of second variety.
Then, C.P. of 9 kg of tea = Rs. (20 × 5 + 25 × 4) = Rs. 200.
S.P. of 9 kg of tea = Rs. (23 × 9) = Rs. 207.
Profit = Rs. (207 – 200) = Rs. 7.
∴ Profit % = $$({7}/{200} × 100)$$% = 3.5%.
