Train A leaves Ludhiana for Delhi at 11 a.m, running at the speed of 60 km/hr. Train B leaves Ludhiana for Delhi by the same route at 2 p.m. on the same day, running at the speed of 72 km/hr. At what time will the two trains meet each other?

(A) 2 a.m. on the next day

(B) 2 p.m. on the next day

(C) 5 p.m. on the next day

(D) 5 a.m. on the next day

Ans: D

Distance covered by train A from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

i.e, in 3 hrs = (60 × 3) = 180 km.

Relative speed = (72 – 60) km/hr = 12 km/hr.

Time taken to cover 180 km at relative speed = $$({180}/{12})$$hrs = 15 hrs.

So, the two trains will meet 15 hrs after 2 p.m.

i.e. at 5 a.m. on the next day.

A man on tour travels 160 km by car at 64 km/hr and another 160 km by bus at 80 km/hr. The average speed for the whole journey is

(A) 35.55 km/hr

(B) 36 km/hr

(C) 71 km/hr

(D) 71.11 km/hr

Ans: D

Total time taken = $$({160} / {64} + {160} / {80})$$ hrs = $${9}/{2}$$ hrs.

∴ Average speed = $$(320 × {2}/{9})$$ km/hr = 71.11 km/hr.

A long distance runner runs 9 laps of a 400 metres track everyday. His timimgs for four consecutive days are 88, 96, 89 and 87 respectively. On an average, how many metres/minute does the runner cover?

(A) 17.78

(B) 30

(C) 40

(D) 90

Ans: C

Average speed = $${Total distance covered} / {Total time taken}$$

= $$({4 × 9 × 400} / {88 + 96 + 89 + 87})$$m/min = $$({14400}/{360})$$m/min = 40 m/min.

Question: 4

A star is 8.1 x 10^{13} km away from the earth. Suppose light travels at the speed of 3.0 x 10^{5} km per second. How long will it take the light from the star to reach the earth?

(A) 7.5 x 10^{3} hours

(B) 7.5 x 10^{4} hours

(C) 2.7 x 10^{10} seconds

(D) .7 x 10^{11} seconds

Ans: B

Required time = $$({8.1 × 10^13} / {3.0 × 10^5})$$seconds = 2.7 × 10^{8} sec

= $$({2.7 × 10^8} / {60 × 60})$$hrs = 7.5 × 10^{4} hrs.

A is travelling at 72 km per hour on a highway while B is travelling at a speed of 25 metres per second. What is the difference in their speeds in metres per second?

(A) 2 m/sec

(B) 3 m/sec

(C) 5 m/sec

(D) 7 m/sec

Ans: C

A’s speed = 72 km/hr = $$(72 × {5} /{18})$$ m/sec = 20 m/sec.

B’s speed = 25 m/sec.

Difference = (25 – 20) m/sec = 5 m/sec.
