100+ Volume and Surface Area Questions for Bank Exams - 1

Question: 1

The number of bricks, each measuring 25 cm × 12.5 cm × 7.5 cm, required to construct a wall 6 m long, 5 m high and 0.5 m thick, while the mortar occupies 5% of the volume of the wall is

(A) 3040

(B) 5740

(C) 6080

(D) 8120

Ans: C

Volume of the bricks = 95%

Volume of wall = $$({95}/{100} × 600 × 500 × 50)$$cm3.

Volume of 1 brick = (25 × 12.5 × 7.5)cm3.

∴ Number of bricks = $$({95}/{100} × {600 × 500 × 50} / {25 × 12.5 × 7.5})$$ = 6080.

Question: 2

If each edge of a cube is doubled, then its volume

(A) is doubled

(B) becomes 4 times

(C) becomes 6 times

(D) becomes 8 times

Ans: D

Let original edge = a. Then volume = a3.

New edge = 2a. So new volume = (2a)3 = 8a3.

∴ Volume becomes 8 times.

Question: 3

Find the volume of the largest right circular cone that can be cut out from a cube whose edge is 9 cm.

(A) 170.93 cm3

(B) 180.93 cm3

(C) 190.93 cm3

(D) 200.93 cm3

Ans: C

Volume of the largest cone

= Volume of the come diameter of base 9 cm and height 9 cm

= $$({1/3} × {22/7} × 4.5 × 4.5 × 9)$$cm3 = $$({1336.5}/{7})$$cm3 = 190.93cm3.

Question: 4

Each side of a cube is decreased by 25%. Find the ratio of the volume of the original cube and the resulting cube.

(A) 8 : 1

(B) 27 : 64

(C) 64 : 1

(D) 64 : 27

Ans: D

Let the side of cube = 10cm

∴ Original volume = 10 × 10 × 10 = 1000cm3

Now, side of new cube = 10 - 25% of 10 = 7.5cm

∴ New volume = 7.5 × 7.5 × 7.5 = 421.875cm3

∴ Required ratio = $${1000}/{421.875}$$ = $${1000000}/{421875}$$ = $${64}/{27}$$ = 64 : 27.

Question: 5

In a shower, 5 cm of rainfalls. The volume of water that falls in 1.5 hectares of ground is

(A) 75 cu.m

(B) 750 cu.m

(C) 7500 cu.m

(D) 75000 cu.m

Ans: B

Area = (1.5 × 10000)m2 = 15000 m2.

Depth = $${5}/{100}$$m = $${1}/{20}$$m.

∴ Volume = (Area × Depth) = $$(15000 × {1}/{20})$$m3 = 750 m3.
