100+ Problems on Trains Questions for Bank Exams - 1

Question: 1

A train, 150 m long takes 30 seconds to cross a bridge 500 m long. How much time will the train take to cross a platform 370 m long?

(A) 18 sec

(B) 21 sec

(C) 24 sec

(D) 30 sec

Ans: C

Speed of the train = $$({150 + 500} / {30})$$ m/sec = $$({65} / {3})$$ m/sec.

∴ Required time = $$[{150 + 370} / {65/3}]$$ sec = $$(520 × {3}/{65})$$ sec = 24 sec.

Question: 2

Two trains of lengths 120 m and 90 m are running with speeds of 80 km/hr and 55 km/hr respectively towards each other on parallel lines. If they are 90 m apart, after how many seconds they will cross each other?

(A) 5.6 sec

(B) 7.2 sec.

(C) 7.7 sec.

(D) 8 sec.

Ans: D

Relative speed = (80 + 55) km/hr = 135 km/hr

= $$(135 × {5}/{18})$$ m/sec = $$({75}/{2})$$ m/sec.

Distance covered = (120 + 90 + 90) m = 300 m.

Required time = $$(300 × {2}/{75})$$ sec = 8 sec.

Question: 3

Two trains 250 m and 200 m long are running on parallel track at the rate of 36 km/hr and 45 km/hr respectively. In how much time will they cross each other, if they are running in the same direction?

(A) 72 sec

(B) 144 sec

(C) 160 sec

(D) 180 sec

Ans: D

Relative speed of faster train w.r.t slower train

= 45 - 36 = 9 km/hr = $$9 × {5}/{18}$$ m/s = 2.5 m/s

Time taken to cross each other = $${Sum of lengths of train} / {Relative speed of train}$$

Time taken to cross each other = $${250 + 200} / {2.5}$$ = $${450} / {2.5}$$ = 180 sec.

Question: 4

A train 110 metres long is running with a speed of 60 kmph. In what time will it pass a man who is running at 6 kmph in the direction opposite to that in which the train is going?

(A) 5 sec

(B) 6 sec

(C) 7 sec

(D) 8 sec

Ans: B

Speed of the train relative to man = (60 + 6) km/hr

= 66 km/hr = $$(66 × {5}/{18})$$ m/sec. = $$({55}/{3})$$m/sec.

∴ Time taken to pass the man = = $$(110 × {3}/{55})$$ sec = 6 sec.

Question: 5

A 150 m long train is running with a speed of 68 kmph. In what time will it pass a man who is running at 8 kmph in the same direction in which the train is going?

(A) 7 sec

(B) 9 sec

(C) 10 sec

(D) 13 sec

Ans: B

Speed of the train relative to man = (68 – 8) kmph

= $$(60 × {5}/{18})$$m/sec = $$({50}/{3})$$m/sec.

Time taken by the train to cross the man

= Time taken by it cover 150 m at $$({50}/{3})$$m/sec = $$(150 × {3}/{50})$$sec = 9 sec.
