Two trains of lengths 120 m and 90 m are running with speeds of 80 km/hr and 55 km/hr respectively towards each other on parallel lines. If they are 90 m apart, after how many seconds they will cross each other?

Relative speed = (80 + 55) km/hr = 135 km/hr

= \$\$(135 × {5}/{18})\$\$ m/sec = \$\$({75}/{2})\$\$ m/sec.

Distance covered = (120 + 90 + 90) m = 300 m.

Required time = \$\$(300 × {2}/{75})\$\$ sec = 8 sec.

Two trains 250 m and 200 m long are running on parallel track at the rate of 36 km/hr and 45 km/hr respectively. In how much time will they cross each other, if they are running in the same direction?

Relative speed of faster train w.r.t slower train

= 45 - 36 = 9 km/hr = \$\$9 × {5}/{18}\$\$ m/s = 2.5 m/s

Time taken to cross each other = \$\${Sum of lengths of train} / {Relative speed of train}\$\$

Time taken to cross each other = \$\${250 + 200} / {2.5}\$\$ = \$\${450} / {2.5}\$\$ = 180 sec.

A train 110 metres long is running with a speed of 60 kmph. In what time will it pass a man who is running at 6 kmph in the direction opposite to that in which the train is going?

Speed of the train relative to man = (60 + 6) km/hr

A 150 m long train is running with a speed of 68 kmph. In what time will it pass a man who is running at 8 kmph in the same direction in which the train is going?

Speed of the train relative to man = (68 – 8) kmph

= \$\$(60 × {5}/{18})\$\$m/sec = \$\$({50}/{3})\$\$m/sec.

Time taken by the train to cross the man

= Time taken by it cover 150 m at \$\$({50}/{3})\$\$m/sec = \$\$(150 × {3}/{50})\$\$sec = 9 sec.
