In favour of military training:
In the modern world no country can maintain large standing armies. Same is the case with a big country like ours because professionally paid army is beyond our resources. Hence, we must make ourselves capable of mobilising our young men and women at a short notice if any portion of our country is threatened.
It will save money and labour of a poor country like us because militarily trained youth will not have to be paid regular salary, allowance and other facilities.
From their very youth, the growing minds of youngsters will imbibe the ideas of nationalism and responsibility towards their nation.
It will not only keep them physically and mentally healthy and active but will also provide them with the right type of discipline which will stands them in good stead in whatever profession they choose as a career.
We are now surrounded by hostile neighbours, namely, China and Pakistan who have created troubles in the past, and the latter is continuing with its proxy war through state sponsored terrorism. They cannot be deterred by the high Himalayas or the vast seas. Therefore, we have to be internally strong enough to face their aggressions.
Today’s military wars cannot be fought by the professional army alone. In the age of intercontinental Balistic Missiles, pilotless aircrafts and nuclear, hydrogen and biological a very important role.
Against military training:
Introduction of compulsory military training in educational institutions will only vitiate the entire system of education and a student will get neither good civil education nor any worthwhile military training.
There is a world of difference between general education and military education. The latter is a specialised subject. Any specialised education should be imparted only after a student has received a general education.
Besides, not all students have the inclination or temperament for military training. Hence, teaching soldiering to such disinterested youth would only be sheer waste of time and money.
Giving military education to the youth will make them war minded or trigger happy. Besides, when everyone is trained to handle a weapon, it may makes revolutions easier in a nation.
At a time when there is a trend against any type of terrorism and in favour of peace, it may be national waste to spend money on military training in educational institutions which could instead be utilised for economic development.
Therefore, military training should not be made compulsory. Yes, it may be taught as an optional subject and that too, to only those students who have special aptitude for this or want t join the Armed Forces as a full time career.
At present, some of our universities are teaching military science at graduate and post graduate level.
Besides, NCC is also attracting our youth in our Inter Colleges and NCC cadets have some quota fixed for them in the Armed Forces. This approach is preferable to compulsory military training.
