Army:
While in Navy and Air Force the personnel are normally secluded from the civil society and hence, there is no human or social touch for them. Armymen get several opportunities to come in touch with their own countrymen or those of the enemy. In today’s turbulent times, they come to the rescue of their people not only during civil strife or riots but also during natural calamities such as cyclone, floods, earthquakes, etc.
In the Air Force one in confined to a cabin in the skies and in the Navy to a ship in the deep blue sea – with a restriction imposed by the very nature of one’s job. In Army, on the otherhand, one gets more freedom of movement. Land, for a soldier, does not prove to be a limiting factor.
Of the three services, the organisation of the Army is the oldest in the world. Navy and Air Force, on the contrary, are comparatively recent in origin. Moreover, Army has glorious traditions of its own with several epoch-making battles to its credit. Navy and Air Force have still a long way to go in this respect.
The defence of a nation is ensured, in fact, by the Army which fights on land – the cause of many a battle in the past and even today. Navy and Air Force do provide support to the Army in some cases, no doubt, but their role is only supplementary; ultimately, it is men marching yard, on land, who win a battle of war decisively.
While Navy remains confined to the sea and comes into play only when an opporunity presents itself and the Air Force engages in hit and run type do-or-die battles which do not provide much scope for tactical adventures. Army is full of opporunities to show one’s spirit and realise one’s capability to involve in tactical manoeuvres and achieve the desired result.
Navy:
The life in the Navy is full of perpetual joy where one, being far removed from the strife and turmoil on the surface of the Earth, can live like a philosopher in one’s own dream land – enjoying the wide expanse of the sea and gazing at the stars. The maddening and distracting hustle bustle of the Army and Air Force is blissfully absent here.
Life in the Navy provides one with an opportunity to travel around the coast of one’s own country and even abroad. Thus, one enjoys the double benefit of beings both a tourist and earning livelihood.
The life on the sea imparts a new educative value to the lives of seamen which is not there in the Army or Air Force. Team spirit is much more conspicuous here because their sufferings and social enjoyments both take place in a closed, limited context.
More than in the Army or Air Force the adventure on the sea is really thrilling and worth it. It is not only the enemies that one faces on the sea; one has also to contend with strange and dangerous animals of the deep sea, not to speak of the adverse weather conditions.
Air Force:
This youngest wing of the defence services proves the aptness of the old slogan “Life is short and art is long”. While it takes years for an airman to become perfect in his job, he can wiped off the face of the Earth within seconds.
There is much more scope for adventure in the Air Force. One is not impeded by land barriers or cyclones of the sea. Here, sky is the limit as limitless heights beacon one to comepete with the birds and touch the sky.
Modern sophisticated warfare cannot be conducted effectively but for the cover provided to the Army and Navy by the Air Force.
Air Force has in fact added value and thus proved its utility in today’s wars. In the age of missiles and pilotless aircrafts, it is prominent role played by the Air Force alone that can bring Saddam Hussains and Taibans to their toes.
The personnel in the other two services do not get a better perspective of human existence than an airman who, above in the sky, is far removed from the madding crowd – most often, even from his own men and always faces death in a cool, calm and detached manner.
During Kargil operations, our Air Force did wonderful job of supporting the Army at great heights and foiled Pakistan’s evil designs. Even during natural calamities Air Force helps in rescue and relief operations carried out by the civil authorities.
