Hindi:

A national language is one through which the entire nation can express its ideas, maximum number of the populace speaks and understands it should be linked to the cultural background of the nation, its spirit must be scientific and easy, and through which political, economic and social activities of the nation are conducted.

In India about 85 percent of its population can understand Hindi. Even in South India, Hindi has acquired wide acceptance. Except for a few languages of the South, it has proximity to most of our languages. Therefore, it is easier to learn Hindi, English, on the other hand, is a foreign language and has nothing in common with any Indian language.

The argument that only English, and not Hindi, is capable of ensuring our economic development and industrial growth because of its utility for scientific, technical and higher education is untenable. The fact is that over the years.

Hindi too has assimilated several words from other languages like English, French, Russian, Japanese and Persian etc. moreover, being related to Sanskrit which has the largest and richest glossary among the world languages.

Our Constituent assembly had accepted Hindi as the national language on 14th September, 1949 and it was expected that the Government would complete the task of enriching Hindi and giving its rightful place within 15 years.

Just as a nation has a separate flag and currency of its own to show its identity so also must it have a common, national language that is spoken throughout the length and breadth of its entire territory and sustains the spirit of national unity.

For a multilingual country like India, which has 18 official regional languages and about 1652 dialects and diversity of customs and traditions, a common link language is a must to provide a means of communication to all sections of the people. Hindi being the most widely known and used language rightfully qualifies for this role.

Champions of English language are mistaken in the belief that only English can play the role in a lingua franca in India and that English represents advancements in science and technology. They are ignorant of our great achievements in science, medicine, astronomy and philosophy.

Therefore, we should promote and encourage Hindi as our national language for it spells equality amongst us all.

English:

English is the only language in which international conferences, seminars and workshops are conducted on important issues before the world and a great output of ideas is generated which we can use for our own benefit.

Further English has got wide acceptance as a medium for creative writing in several countries. But for English our own creative writers such as Vikram Seth, Arundhati Roy, Khushwant Singh etc. could not have earned the international recognition that they have.

In fact, English is the window through which we know the great world outside. Therefore, by having English as our national language instead of Hindi, we would be broadening the vision of our countrymen.

We should learn from the experience of Great Britain which took it 100 years to change from Latin to English in its judicial system. If we wish to replace English by Hindi in our case – in High Courts and Supreme Court – the time factor, difficulty and impracticability in doing so can well be imagined. Hence, in our over – enthusiasm to introduce Hindi at all levels, we should not lose sight of the pitfalls.

Can we overlook the living example of the United States of America (USA) which inspite of being multi-social and multi lingual maintained its unity intact by adopting English – the language of their previous masters – as the national language?

The people in the non-Hindi speaking states have a latent fear that should English be replaced by Hindi; those in the Hindi heartland will get an undue advantage to their detriment. Therefore, the votaries of Hindi should give up clamouring for replacing English by Hindi in our national interest because any polarisation on the basis of language is fraught with potential risk to the very unity in diversity of India.

 Knowledge of English language has become a great asset for us Indians in today’s free flow of information technology and labour which has provided us with immense job opportunities in the advanced nations of the world. We should thank of God for having given us the blessing of English in the disguise of the English rule over us, for it has enabled us to steal of march over other developing countries which, because of a dearth of English teachers, find it difficult to introduce English and make the most of that its knowledge offers.

In the global village that the world has today become we should think in international terms and therefore, adopt English as our national language without delay.

English has its utility as an international link language. It is widely spoken and used all over the world. Half a dozen countries have it as their first language and almost the rest of the world has accepted it as the second language.

Higher learning and technology is possible only through English because all important books on scientific research and technology are available in English only.
