Time & Distance TNPSC Previous Year Questions - 1
Question: 1
A car is driven at the speed of 100 km/hr and stops for 10 minutes at the end of every 150 km. To cover a distance of 1000 km, it will take
(A) 7 hours
(B) 9 hours
(C) 11 hours
(D) 13 hours
Ans: C
Time taken to cover 150 km = (1 hr 30 min + 10 min)
= 1 hr 40 min = $$1{2}/{3}$$hr = $${5}/{3}$$hr.
Time taken to cover (150 × 6) i.e., 900 km
= $$({5}/{3} × 6)hrs$$ = 10 hrs.
Remaining 100 km is covered in 1 hour.
Total time taken = (10 + 1)hrs = 11 hrs.
Question: 2
A is travelling at 72 km per hour on a highway while B is travelling at a speed of 25 metres per second. What is the difference in their speeds in metres per second?
(A) 2 m/sec
(B) 3 m/sec
(C) 5 m/sec
(D) 7 m/sec
Ans: C
A’s speed = 72 km/hr = $$(72 × {5}/{18})$$m/sec = 20 m/sec.
B’s speed = 25 m/sec.
Difference = (25 - 20) m/sec = 5 m/sec.
Question: 3
Car A travels at the speed of 65 km/hr and reaches its destination in 8 hours. Car B travels at the speed of 70 km/hr and reaches its destination in 4 hours. What is the ratio of the distance covered by car A and car B respectively?
(A) 7 : 11
(B) 7 : 13
(C) 11 : 7
(D) 13 : 7
Ans: D
Required ratio = (65 × 8) : (70 × 4) = 520 : 280 = 13 : 7.
Question: 4
A star is 8.1×1023 km away from the earth. Suppose light travels at the speed of 3.0×105 per second. How long will it take the light from the star to reach the earth?
(A) 7.5 × 102 hours
(B) 7.5 × 103 hours
(C) 7.5 × 104 hours
(D) 2.7 × 1010 hours
Ans: C
Required time = $$({8.1 × 10^13} / {3.0 × 10^5})$$ = 2.7 × 108 sec
= $$({2.7 × 10^8} / {60 × 60})hrs$$ = 7.5 × 104hrs.
Question: 5
A family planning a weekend trip, decides to spend not more than a total of 8 hours driving. By leaving early in the morning, they can average 40 miles per hour on the way to their destination. Due to the heavy Sunday traffic, they average only 30 miles per hour on the return trip. What is the farthest distance from home they can plan to go?
(A) 120 miles or less
(B) Between 120 and 140 miles
(C) 140 miles
(D) Between 140 and 160 miles
Ans: B
Ratio of speeds while going and returning = 40 : 30 = 4 : 3.
Ratio of times taken while going and returning = 3 : 4.
Time taken while going = $$({3}/{7} × 8)$$ hr = $${24}/{7}$$ hr.
Time taken while returning = $$({4}/{7} × 8)$$ hr = $${32}/{7}$$ hr.
∴ Required distance = $$(40 × {24}/{7})$$ miles = $${960} / {7}$$ = 137.14 miles.
