Speed, Time, Distance Important Formula, Shortcuts & Tricks Pdf - 1
Question: 1
A person wishes to reach his destination 90 km away in 3 hours but for the first half of the journey his speed was 20 km/hr. His average speed for the rest of the journey should be
(A) 0.75 km/min
(B) 1 km/min
(C) 40 km/hr
(D) 60 km/hr
Ans: B
Time taken to travel 45 km = $$({45}/{20})$$hr = $${9}/{4}$$hr = $$2{1}/{4}$$hr = 2 hr 15 min.
Remaining time = (3 hr - 2hr 15 min) 45 min
Hence, required speed = $$({45}/{45})$$km/min = 1 km/min.
Question: 2
Ramesh is walking at a speed of 10 kilometres per hour. After every kilometer he takes rest for 5 minutes. The time taken to cover a distance of 5 kilometres by Ramesh is
(A) 30 minutes
(B) 35 minutes
(C) 50 minutes
(D) 55 minutes
Ans: C
Speed of Ramesh = 10 kmph
Ramesh will take rest four times during his journey
∴ Required time = $$(5 ×{1}/{10} × 60)$$minutes + (5 × 4)minutes
= 30 + 20 minutes = 50 minutes
Ramesh takes time to cover a distance of 5 kms.
Question: 3
An aeroplane flies twice as fast as a train which covers 60 miles in 80 minutes. What distance will the aeroplane cover in 20 minutes?
(A) 30 miles
(B) 35 miles
(C) 40 miles
(D) 50 miles
Ans: A
Time taken to cover 60 miles = 80 min = $${4}/{3}hrs$$.
∴ Speed of the train = $$(60 × {3}/{4}) mph$$ = 45 mph.
Speed of the aeroplane = (2 × 45) mph = 90 mph.
Distance covered by the aeroplane in 60 min = 90 miles.
Distance covered by the aeroplane in 20 min = $$({90}/{60} × 20)$$ = 30 miles.
Question: 4
The average speed of a bus is one third of the speed of a train. The train covers 1125 km in 15 hours. How much distance will the bus cover in 36 minutes?
(A) 12 km
(B) 13 km
(C) 15 km
(D) 20 km
Ans: C
Speed of the train $$({1125}/{15})$$km/hr = 75 km/hr.
Speed of the bus = $$({1}/{3} × 75)$$km/hr = 25 km/hr.
Distance covered by the bus in 60 min = 25 km.
Distance covered by the bus in 36 min = $$({25}/{60} × 36)km$$ = 15 km.
Question: 5
A thief is noticed by a policeman from a distance of 200 m. The thief starts running and the policeman chases him. The thief and the policeman run at the rate of 10 km and 11 km per hour respectively. What is the distance between them after 6 minutes?
(A) 90 m
(B) 100 m
(C) 120 m
(D) 180 m
Ans: B
Relative speed of the thief and policeman = (11 - 10) = 1 km/hr.
Distance covered in 6 minutes = $$({1}/{60} × 6)$$km = $${1}/{10}$$ km = 100 m.
∴ Distance between the thief and policeman = (200 - 100) = 100 m.
