Question: 1

Anna left for city A from B at 5.20 a.m. She travelled at the speed of 80 km/hr for 2 hours 15 minutes. After that the speed was reduced to 60 km/hr. if the distance between two cities is 350 kms, at what time did Anna reach city A?

(A) 9.20 a.m.

(B) 9.25 a.m.

(C) 10.25 a.m.

(D) 10.35 a.m.

Ans: C

Distance covered in 2 hrs 15 min, i.e.,

$$2{1}/{4}$$hrs = $$(80 × {9}/{4})$$hrs = 180 hrs.

Time taken to cover remaining distance

= $$({350 - 180}/{60})hrs$$ = $${17}/{6}$$hrs = $$2{5}/{6}$$hrs = 2 hrs 50 min.

Total time taken = (2hrs 15 min + 2 hrs 50 min) = 5 hrs 5 min.

So, Anna reached city A at 10.25 a.m.

Question: 2

A cyclist rides 24 km at 16 kmph and further 36 km at 15 kmph. Find his average speed of the journey?

(A) 15.5 kmph

(B) 15.38 kmph

(C) 15.48 kmph

(D) 16 kmph

Ans: B

Total distance travelled = (24 + 36) km = 60 km.

Total time taken = $$({24/16} + {36/15})$$hr = $$({3/2} + {12/5})$$hr = $${39}/{10}$$ hrs.

∴ Average speed = $$(60 × {10}/{39})$$km/hr = $$({200}/{13})$$km/hr m= 15.38 km/hr.

Question: 3

A and B start from the same point and in the same direction at 7 a.m. to walk around a rectangular field 400 m × 300 m. A ad B walk at the rate of 3 km/hr and 2.5 km/hr respectively. How many times shall they cross each other if they continue to walk till 12 : 30 p.m.?

(A) Once

(B) Twice

(C) Thrice

(D) Not even once

Ans: A

Perimeter of the field = 2(400 + 300)m = 1400 m = 1.4 km.

Since A and B move in the same direction, so they will first meet each other when there is a difference of one round. i.e., 1.4 km between the two.

Relative speed of A and B = (3 – 2.5) km/hr = 0.5 km/hr.

Time taken to cover 1.4 km at this speed = $$({1.4}/{0.5})$$hr = $$2{4}/{5}hr$$ = 2 hr 48 min.

So they shall first cross each other at 9 : 48 a.m. and again, 2 hr 48 min after 9 : 48 a.m. i.e., 12 : 36 p.m.

Thus, till 12 : 30 p.m. they will cross each other once.

Question: 4

A thief is noticed by a policeman from a distance of 200 m. The thief starts running and the policeman chases him. The thief and the policeman chases him. The thief and the policeman run at the speed of 10 km/hr and 11 km/hr respectively. What is the distane between them after 6 minutes?

(A) 100 m

(B) 120 m

(C) 140 m

(D) 150 m

Ans: A

Speed of thief = 10 km/hr

Speed of policeman = 11 km/hr

Relative speed of policeman with respect to thief = (11 - 10) = 1 km/hr

Thief is noticed by a policeman from a distance of 200 m.

Distance covered in 6 minutes $${1000}/{60} × 6$$ = 100 m.

Distance between them after 6 minutes = 200 – 100 = 100 m.

Question: 5

A car goes 20 metres in a second. Find its speed in km/hr

(A) 18

(B) 36

(C) 48

(D) 72

Ans: D

1 m/sec = $${18}/{5}$$ km/ph

Car covers 20 metres in a second

∴ 20 m/sec = $${20 × 18}/{5}$$ = 72 km/ph.
