Question: 1

A can do a piece of work in 8 days and B can do the same piece of work in 12 days. A and B together complete the same piece of work and get Rs. 200 as the combined wages B’s share of the wages will be

(A) Rs. 70

(B) Rs. 75

(C) Rs. 80

(D) Rs. 95

Ans: C

A’s share “ B’s share = Ratio of their 1 day’s work = \$\${1} / {8}\$\$ : \$\${1} / {12}\$\$ = 3 : 2.

∴ B’s share = Rs. \$\$(200 × {2} / {5})\$\$ = Rs. 80.

Question: 2

Kim can do a work in 3 days while David can do the same work in 2 days. Both of them finish the work together and get Rs. 150. What is the share of Kim?

(A) Rs. 30

(B) Rs. 40

(C) Rs. 50

(D) Rs. 60

Ans: D

Kim’s wages : David’s wages

= Kim’s 1 day’s work : David 1 day’s work

= \$\${1}/ {3}\$\$ : \$\${1} / {2}\$\$ = 2 : 3.

∴ Kim’s share = Rs. \$\$({2} / {5} × 150)\$\$ = Rs. 60.

Question: 3

8 men can complete a piece of work in 20 days. 8 women can complete the same work in 32 days. In how many days will 5 men and 8 women together complete the same work?

(A) 10 days

(B) 16 days

(C) 18 days

(D) 20 days

Ans: B

1 man’s 1 day’s work = \$\$1 / ({20} × {8})\$\$ = \$\${1} / {160}\$\$

1 woman’s 1 day’s work = \$\$1 / ({32} × {8})\$\$ = \$\${1} / {256}\$\$

(5 men + 8 women)’s 1 day’s work

= \$\$({5} / {160} + {8} / {256})\$\$ = \$\${1} / {32}\$\$ + \$\${1} / {32}\$\$ = \$\${1} / {16}\$\$

Hence, 5 men and 8 women together can complete the work in 16 days.

Question: 4

A, B and C completed a work costing Rs. 1800. A worked for 6 days, B for 4 days and C for 9 days. If their daily wages are in the ratio of 5 : 6 : 4. How much amount will be received by A?

(A) Rs. 500

(B) Rs. 600

(C) Rs. 700

(D) Rs. 800

Ans: B

Let the daily wages of A, B and C be Rs. 5x, 6x and 4x respectively.

Then, ratio of their amounts

= (5x × 6) : (6x × 4) : (4x × 9)

= 30 : 24 : 36 = 5 : 4 : 6.

∴ A’s amount = Rs. \$\$(1800 × {5} / {15})\$\$ = Rs. 600.

Question: 5

A does 20% less work than B. If A can complete a piece of work in \$\$7{1} / {2}\$\$ hours, then can do it in

(A) 5 hours

(B) 6 hours

(C) 7 hours

(D) 8 hours

Ans: B

Ratio of times taken by A and B = 100 : 80 = 5 : 4.

Suppose B takes x hours to do the work.

5 : 4 :: \$\${15} / {2}\$\$ : x ⇔ x = \$\$({4 × 15} / {2 × 5})\$\$ ⇔ x = 6 hours.
