Time, Speed and Distance Questions for Placement - 2

Question: 6

A man riding his bicycle covers 150 metres in 25 seconds. What is his speed in km per hour?

(A) 20

(B) 21

(C) 21.6

(D) 23

Ans: C

Speed= $$({150} / {25})$$m/sec = 6 m/sec

= $$(6 × {18} / {5})$$ km/hr = $$({108} / {5})$$ km/hr = 21.6 km/hr.

Question: 7

Two trains starting at the same time from two stations 200 km apart and going in opposite directions cross each other at a distance of 110 km from one of the stations. What is the ratio of their speeds?

(A) 9 : 20

(B) 11 :9

(C) 11 : 20

(D) 11 : 28

Ans: B

In the same time the trains cover 110 km and 90 km respectively.

∴ Ratio of their speeds = 110 : 90 = 11 : 9.

Question: 8

A motor car starts with the speed of 70 km/hr with its speed increasing every two hours by 10 kmph. In how many hours will it cover 345 kms?

(A) $$2{1} / {4}$$ hrs

(B) $$2{4} / {6}$$ hrs

(C) $$4{1} / {2}$$ hrs

(D) 4 hrs 5 min

Ans: C

Distance covered in first 2 hours = (70 × 2) km = 140 km.

Distance covered in next 2 hours = (80 × 2) km = 160 km.

Remaining distance = 345 – (140 + 160) = 45 km.

Speed in the fifth hour = 90 km/hr.

Time taken to cover 45 km = $$({45} / {90})$$ hr = $${1} / {2}$$ hr.

∴ Total time taken = $$(2 + 2 + {1} / {2})$$ = $$4{1} / {2}$$hrs.

Question: 9

Aryans runs at a speed of 40 metres/minute. Rahul follows him after an interval of 5 minutes and runs at a speed of 50 metres/minute. Rahul’s dog runs at a speed of 60 metres/minute and starts along with Rahul. The dog reaches Aryan and then comes back to Rahul, and continues to do so till Rahul reaches Aryan. What is the total distance covered by the dog?

(A) 600 m

(B) 750 m

(C) 1200 m

(D) 1800 m

Ans: C

Distance covered by Aryan in 5 min = (40 × 5)m = 200 m.

Relative speed of Rahul w.r.t. Aryan = (50 – 40) m/min = 10 m/min.

Time taken to cover 200 m at relative speed = $$({200} / {10})$$min = 20 min.

Distance covered by the dog in 20 min = (60 x 20) m = 1200 m.

Question: 10

A speed of 30.6 km/hr is the same as

(A) 5.1 m/sec

(B) 7.1 m/sec

(C) 8.5 m/sec

(D) 110.16 m/sec

Ans: C

30.6 km/hr = $$(30.6 × {5} / {18})$$m/sec = $${153} / {18}$$ m/sec = 8.5 m/sec.
